Home of Carolina Circle Mall

It All Comes Together Again

The Beginning

In 1972, Alpert Investment Corporation began proposing a new mall that would be located in the northeastern section of Greensboro.

From my understanding, they looked at several other sites before deciding upon US-29/Cone Blvd. I believe I heard something about a location near what is now Wet & Wild Emerald Pointe.

Step 1 took place in 1973 when Alpert bought the site from Dr. T. Edgar Sikes. You can read more about him and his farm here.

Construction started in 1974 and lasted over two years.

A Mall is Born

On August 4, 1976, the new Carolina Circle Mall officially opened. Twenty-two stores were open that day including...

  • Belk
  • Ivey's
  • Montgomery Ward
  • Electronic America
  • Chick-Fil-A
  • The Karmelkorn Shoppe
  • Orange Julius of America
  • Carlyle & Co.
  • Kay Jewelers
  • Gordon's Jewelers
  • Radio Shack
  • Kinney's
  • Thom McAn
  • Butler's
  • County Seat
  • Foxmoor
  • Camelot Music
  • Ridgeway Optical Co.
  • General Nutrition Co.
  • K&K Toys
  • Walden Books Co.
  • Champs

Belk & Montgomery Ward, however, had already been open for several months.
