It All Comes Together Again

Introduction

From 1976 to the mid 1980s, the main attraction of Carolina Circle Mall was of course, the Ice Rink. Let's take a look at the mall during this era.

The Ice Rink

Courtesy of Vann Massey, you can see what the Ice Chalet area looked like back in 1976.

Sorrounding the Ice Rink was the Electronic America video arcade, Chick-Fil-A, Tuesday's Restaurant (Annabelle's later), New York Pizza, and an ice cream shop.

People from all over the Greensboro area, including southern Virginia, would enjoy the ice rink dearly. They would head out to the mall before any stores were open and enjoy some early morning ice skating. Lessons were also given.

Interior Design

As you can see, the interior design during the Ice Rink Era was your basic colors brown and yellow.

Unfortunately, that's about all I know. I don't have many pictures of the mall during this era to help me.

Current Event Disco

David Gwynn sent me this picture of The Current Even Disco from the late '70s. Before disco died a horrible horrible death in the early '80s, teens would head over to Carolina Circle Mall and danced the night away at The Current Event. I believe the disco was located near Montgomery Ward.

Oh Deer

From what I've heard from the Internet and people, apparently some deer have visited the mall before.

On Sunday, December 4, 1977, at 10:30 AM, three deer who were startled by cleaning equipment in the parking lot, paniced and broke through two plate glass windows. They then jump 18 feet to the first floor near the ice rink. Sadly, one doe broke its neck and died. The surviving two were captured and released.

Let's investigate this situation and see what caused it.

In 1977, Carolina Circle Mall was still on the outskirts of Greensboro. Of course, deer are more common outside of the city. Also, it's a well known fact that animals can easily be scared by the slightest sound.

The deer that was killed when it fell suffered from a broken neck. Of course, a broken neck can have the strength to kill.

My friend knows some people who were at the mall (I think ice skating) right after the deer incident. At least they weren't there during the deer incident.

From Carol W. Martin/Greensboro Historical Museum Collection, comes this view of the back of the mall from 1978.
